Film & TV Language index

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 Film & TV Language: index so far We are half-way through our Film & TV Language unit and need to create an index to ensure we are up-to-date on all work so far. Not only does this keep the concepts and media terminology fresh in your mind but it will also highlight if you've missed anything through absence. Your index should currently include the following: 1) Film poster analysis 2) Mise-en-scene analysis blog tasks 3) Mise-en-scene video recreation and learner response 4) Lighting analysis blog tasks 5) Sound practical task 6) Sound: parallel and contrapuntal video feedback and learner response 7) Sound analysis blog tasks   For your index, it needs to link to YOUR corresponding blogpost so you can access your work on each key concept quickly and easily. Life on mars sound Analysis

Image
"Life on Mars" (2006) Season 1, Episode one. Analysis: -How does the sound help establish the setting and time period? The music at the beginning of the scene is non- diegetic meaning that the characters within the scene cannot hear it. The music sounds like it's from the 1980s ruffly, the music gives off a retro vibe to it which sets the scene for the general themes of the series. There is dialogue in the middle and at the end of  the scene and during it they use harsh aggressive tones and colloquial language which makes the viewer's perspective of the people in the scene close to the dominant view of the people and situation which is that the actors are playing the roles of stereotypical police men from England. Even the costume of the police men suggests that they are middle class and as they are in suit and tie that suggests they have a professional role. There are props within the scene which suggest the time period of which the first episode is set one of...

Sound analysis

Sound analysis: blog tasks 1) Find a film clip on YouTube that uses sound in an interesting way. Analyse the use of sound, making sure you use the key language we have learned about sound in film: Diegetic and non-diegetic sound Parallel and contrapuntal sound Sound bridges Remember to discuss/analyse all the different types of sound present in the clip: Music Dialogue Voiceover Sound effects You also need to highlight or put in bold any use of media language. https://youtu.be/7k5FTYc7xsY?si=GsWhzDeFK-S57ulZ This clip is the first two minuites of the guardians of the galaxy movie  In this film clip the music is used to set the retro and melancholic tone of the scene. The music is dietetic in the beginning for the protagonist as he is listening to that song on his Walkman, when the Grandfather walks towards the boy and takes the headphones off of him the music simmers down and stops showing that the music itself is diegetic, the music itself the lyrics represent the sad emot...

Sound Practical

For this project I started off by coming up with ideas of how I could realistically present parallel and contrapuntal sound within 60 seconds. I made a mind map in my book and finally decided to use nature vs littering/ fly-tipping as an example of the maltreatment of nature by people in our local area. The first half of the video uses parallel sound (sound that matches what you can see) and the other half uses contrapuntal sound  (when the sound you hear is different from what you see) . For this video I wanted to make the viewers reflect on how their actions affect the environment around them; specifically how littering effects the local environment.  This is demonstrated by the sound but also the images, as I used my own original images and clips that were all of the local area in Greenford. For the location of the photo shoot I went local parks and nearby streets to find litter and to my surprise there was an abundance of it which sadly made my job easier. After gatherin...

Lighting blog tasks

Image
Identify examples of high and low-key lighting? This is an example of low key lighting on the right side of the face and more extreme focused lighting on the left side of the face. ( Chiaroscuro) . There is light that reflects off the studio lighting.  Say which depict top , back or under lighting? In this image there is a lot of key light to the side of the characters face which further enhances the dramatic effect and shadows cast on the right side of the characters face, especially with no filler lighting. What effects are created by the lighting in each image? There is a striking effect caused by this lighting; the lighting itself helping further help the mise-en-scene elements convey the fact that the character here is a villain. Mainly caused by the chiaroscuro ( contrast between light and dark)  and the way the light highlights the smoke in the air Seemingly produced by the cigarette that the woman is smocking which is iconography for power and the female tr...
